Where to Buy Domains Cheap in 2026 (Stop Overpaying)
I bought my first domain in 2014 — getwireframe.com. Paid $14.99 at GoDaddy because that's the only registrar I'd ever heard of. A few months later, I bought simplegrid.css at Namecheap for $8.88. Same .com TLD, two different prices for the exact same product.

See the trap? GoDaddy's $0.01 first year sounds amazing until you realize you're paying $19.99/year forever after that. Over five years, that ".com for a penny" costs you $99.95 — while Cloudflare costs $45.75 for the same thing.
Cloudflare Registrar — My #1 Pick
Cloudflare sells domains at cost. They make exactly zero dollars on domain registration. Every cent you pay goes to the registry (Verisign for .com, etc.) plus the ICANN fee.
.com: $9.15/year, no markup, no renewal increase. Same price year one through year ten.
The catch: you must use Cloudflare's DNS. If you're already on Cloudflare (and you should be — free CDN, DDoS protection, SSL), this is a non-issue. You also can't transfer the domain out for 60 days after registration or transfer-in. This is standard across most registrars.
I moved six domains to Cloudflare last year. My annual domain bill dropped from $96 to $55. That's $41/year saved for a 10-minute migration.
Porkbun — Best for Non-.com TLDs
Porkbun is my go-to for TLDs Cloudflare doesn't support — .io ($35/year), .me ($12/year), .co ($14/year). Their .com is $9.67, barely above Cloudflare. WHOIS privacy is free on all TLDs, the interface is refreshingly simple, and their checkout flow doesn't try to upsell you on hosting, SSL, or email.
I've been a Porkbun customer since 2023. The only downside is their DNS propagation can be slow when you switch nameservers. I use Cloudflare for DNS anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.
Namecheap — Decent Backup Option
Namecheap was my main registrar for six years. Their promo pricing is good — .com for $5.98 first year — but renewal at $14.98 hurts. That's 75% above the registry cost.
I still use Namecheap for email hosting ($11.88/year for private email) and SSL certificates. Their support is genuinely good, and they don't do the shady stuff GoDaddy is famous for. But for pure domain registration, Cloudflare and Porkbun are both cheaper on renewal.
GoDaddy — Just Don't (Real Numbers Below)

Not huge, but consider this: GoDaddy charges $2.99/month for WHOIS privacy protection, which Cloudflare and Porkbun include for free. That's another $107.64 over three years if you pay for it.
GoDaddy also makes transferring out intentionally tedious. I moved three domains from GoDaddy to Cloudflare in 2024. The process took a week because GoDaddy kept "forgetting" to release the authorization codes.
